What actually mattered
- Adjusted profit came in at $3.27 a share vs the $2.97 analysts expected (LSEG via Reuters), and adjusted earnings roughly doubled to $3.9 billion from $2.0 billion a year ago.
- Prices did the work, not volume: ConocoPhillips realized $61.40 per barrel of oil equivalent, 32% more than a year ago, while production slipped to about 2.3 million barrels a day from 2.4 million.
- Reuters notes Brent averaged about $89 a barrel in the quarter, up more than 31% from a year earlier, on Middle East supply worries.
- Cash came back to shareholders: $3.4 billion in distributions, including $2.4 billion of buybacks, and the quarterly dividend goes up 11% to $0.93. The company says it's on track to return 45% of cash from operations in 2026.
- GAAP EPS of $3.34 was a bit higher than the adjusted number, mainly because of a tax reserve reversal.
๐ค Max's verdict
When oil runs hot, ConocoPhillips basically just has to show up, and it showed up 30 cents a share better than expected. It pumped a little less and got paid a lot more, then handed shareholders an 11% raise. Max's take: nice quarter, but the real CEO here is the price of crude.
